What is the GVYMA?

Picture
The GVYMA is a non-profit society consisting of honour ensembles for young musicians in the greater Vancouver area. The ensembles consist of players 19 years of age or younger who audition annually and are selected by the directors for the ensemble.

The first ensemble created under the GVYMA is an Honour Youth Wind Ensemble. This ensemble is directed by Nina Falcos, assisted by a instrumental coaches who are exemplary music education and performance students from UBC. This year's ensemble season runs from September 2011 - June 2012.

What is the secret to the GVYMA's success?

Stimulated Musicality and Artistry

What are the objectives of the GVYMA?

There are two primary objectives of the Greater Vancouver Youth Music Academy:

For Young Musicians:
The primary goal behind the GVYMA ensembles is to provide a creative, educational, and musical experience for advanced young musicians. Through the use of the  success formula above, the students will be involved in a well rounded, artistic environment designed to stimulate their musicality.

For High School Music Programs:
One of the objectives of the GVYMA is to support high school band programs through the Team Concert Series. The Team Concert Series is an opportunity for high schools to collaborate with the GVYMA ensembles in a joint concert hosted by their school. This concert serves as a fundraiser for the high school and the GVYMA, where 60% of the profits go to the hosting school and 40% are retained by the GVYMA. The goal of this program is to help high school music programs make money making music, just as it should be! The TCS also provides an opportunity for high school groups to hear honour ensembles and learn from them, as well as create a larger music community among the musical youth of the lower mainland.

Any high schools who are interested in joining the Team Concert Series should contact us via email at GVYMA.wind.ensemble@gmail.com.
